Is twenty-something too young?

“PREVENTATIVE TREATMENTS” CAN WE STOP WRINKLES BEFORE THEY START?

Think of this topic most will think of the aging adult. But think again. More and more twenty-something year old’s are choosing to have “preventative treatments” to stop — or at least slow down — the formation of wrinkles.

Some people freak out at the thought of aging. Or at least the thought of getting wrinkly. Frown line (those elevens between the eyebrows), forehead lines (when you lift your eyebrows) or crow’s feet (when you smile or scrunch your eyes) all worsen with age. Some young adult may have more wrinkles than others in their age group to begin with. Several factors can contribute. Genetics play a large part in how a person’s skin is affected by age. Other factors, such as lifestyle habits, also play a vital part in a person’s skin health. Habits like smoking, excessive drinking and not protecting your face from the sun can all accelerate the wear-and-tear process on the face. Which side of your face you sleep on can affect wrinkle formation too!

Our wrinkles and fine lines are caused by repeated facial expressions that, over time, become etched on our face even when we aren’t moving. “Positive aging” patients in their 30s, 40s and older attempt to smooth these lines with some treatments, but younger patients who are just beginning to notice the lines can also slow the formation of such lines. This works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles to stop the excessive scrunching, scowling, and smiling expressions in the first place. Minimizing these expressive movements can slow the onset of the wrinkles. Anyone considering these treatments should have a full consultations to discuss all risks, side effects and aftercare prior to making any decisions.

The drawback of having treatment too early is simple: money. It can get expensive for a young adult to have regular treatments. Some also may consider it a waste of funds to start treatment without having defined wrinkles in the first place. Others, however, see it as a money-saving tool with the idea that treating early prevents more numerous treatments later in life. The key is consistency. The effects of treatments can last up to 4 months (roughly) so most will require about 3 treatments per year.
